I am looking for a foreign exchange student program that will allow me to live with a host family (for just the summer). I found a couple, but they are for the school year--which im not interested in.
I want to live with a host family like in a country in england or italy (anywhere in europe)
Hi,
I agree with the other poster, if you limit yourself to just a summer program, you lose many of the benefits of being an exchange student -- mainly the culture and language immersion. If you are just there for the summer, it's more of a holiday and not an academic experience.
If you go for a whole year, or at least a semester, you will be studying in a different language -- and you will truly learn it! Also, colleges and universities LOVE exchange students and often offer them preferred admissions and sometimes scholarship money. On top of that, the language you learn will benefit you in the workplace as well, with a higher salary, especially if you maintain that training through college.
All of this equals a much bigger "bang for your buck"!
As to finding a program, you can look at www.csiet.org. That site lists all the programs certified to operate in the U.S. You should also ask your high school counselor, as an organization is only as good as its local representatives. Generally, Rotary is the cheapest, but most competitive, and AFS, Aspect, 4-H and YFU are usually quality programs as well and offer scholarships.
The best time to go is your junior year. Then you can work your credits easier (your school will give you credit for some of what you do as an exchange student too, but get it in writing) and will have all the fun of your senior year and graduating with your class.

Good luck -- and PLEASE consider the longer program!
im 14 years old and i live in greece but i can speak fluent english and fluent swedish. i would really love to move to america to become a foreign exchange student. i had a friend who lived with me here in greece. he was about as smart as me. now after only one year he is so much more smarter than he was before. is there anyway for me to become a foreign exchange student?
Hi,
Now is a great time to begin thinking about this. The minimum age to come to the US is 15.
The top three programs are AFS, YFU and Rotary. I wouldn't advise trying the others. By all means, stay away from Two Worlds United, which is little more than a scam.
The program will help you with all you need -- finding a host family, school, travel, insurance, orientations and representatives in the US.
I want to host a foreign exchange student from Australia. Where do i go to get one and how old will they be?
Do i get to choose the gender?
Do i get to see a picture of him or her before everything is finalized?
thanks in advance!
Contact the Australian Embassy. They will have plenty of info.
Well I think having a foreign exchange student stay with me would be cool, so where can I look at foreign exchange student info, etc.? I think it would be really neat to host a foreign exchange student if my parents say it's ok.
I commend you on your interest in this! I am a 5-time host mom and new volunteer with a program called Youth For Understanding (YFU). I could talk for hours about our kids! As the school year has already begun, the first thing that your family would need to do is find out if your school will accept an exchange student. Many schools have application deadlines in the summer for the fall semester but may take students for the spring semester. Talk to you counselor at school. (If you contact an exchange program, this will probably be one of the first things they do.) When my husband and I started hosting with YFU, the first thing we did was contact programs on the CSIET (Council for Standards on International Exchange Travel) list. YFU was the program that responded the most to our needs. Therefore, while there are several other reputable programs around, I can only speak for YFU. I suggest checking out their website (yfu-usa.org). It has a ton of information. You can request additional information through this site. You can also email me if you like. Some other interesting sites are:

YFU is also on FaceBook (as am I).
I hope this helps!
