at my school its set up with other schools in the contries so if your school is teamed up with an amirican school then chances are you will get to go. im not sure of another way

I've already asked in these exact words, but I thought I would get better responces posting on the right board!

What should I be expecting with my American exchange?
Hi I'm steph and I'm going to America for 1 year starting Feb 2008. I haven't actually signed-up yet, but I will be soon. I was going to go to a American highschool because I am 17, will be 18 at the end of this year, but I decided to go to a polytech (I think thats called a community college). The awkward thing is the school year starts following the summerholidays in America and New Zealand which means, when a NZ school year starts, Americans are only half way through theres. So rather than go to the last half of a school year and sit exams for something i know nothing about, than start the first 6 months of the school year, I thought I would instead do two six month courses so that when I return home, I'll at least have some qualifications.
As a New Zealander I can drink when I turn 18, so I know I'll have to give that up once I go to the US.

Could you please tell me about your experiances as an exchange student/host, the struggles and what I should expect?


How much control will my host family have over me while I am living with them?
Is it likely they'll take me on any family holidays?
Will I be able to get a job since I won't be in highschool?
Is it likely that I'll have access to the internet so I can update my blog and stay in contact with my friends?
How do people react to foriegn exchange students?

Excellent, that's great that you have the opportunity!

You're right, a polytech is a community college in the US - sounds like a good plan, and will help you if you decide you want to return to the US for university.

As for your other questions:
Your host family will probably give you a curfew, and they might take an interest in your social life, but if you're used to one way of living, it's not a bad idea to have your parents contact your host parents to let them know what they expect of you (assuming you're happy with your own parents!)

Unfortunately, Americans tend to travel less than say, Europeans, but they may very well plan something just for you! And some Americans travel a lot. If they travel, I'm sure they'll take you with them, though.

The age of employment in the US is 16, so assuming your visa allows you to do so, you can work - check with the embassy though, since some student visas might limit employment. Typically, under-18s can only work 20 hours per week in certain jobs. States differ on this.

Most Americans have internet access at home, but if not, your school will have it (though some censor certain sites), as will local cafes (wi-fi is common, try Starbucks - sometimes you have to pay for a subscription though), and your local public library (libraries usually limit you to an hour at a time)

My high school hosted two Russians, a Colombian, and an Ecuadorian exchange student. They were great! I assume you'll be even more welcomed since English is your native language and communication will be easier (and people will certainly adore your accent).

I am traveling to Ireland at the end of June and would like to know if it is better to exchange american dollars in to euros before I go or when I get there?

The best thing to do is to go to the ATM once you get there.

I'm going to London in February and want to transfer my money into british pounds now because over the last month the exchange rate has gotten much better. In case the U.S. dollar becomes much weaker again I want to convert my money now because I already booked my trip in England and have enough money but in jeopardy if the exchange rate becomes worse again. And also, if the exchange rate from U.S. dollars becomes much better from now until february could i can convert back into american dollars and then back into pounds?
