How do you become a yacht broker? What citites/states are best to sell in? Help please!?
My fiance wants to change careers and knows lots about boats, he grew up on one and worked on them his whole life. He would like to become a yacht broker to sell them but doesn't know where to start. Do you need a degree or any kind of special education? What are the best cities/states to work in? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
He knows Southern Florida & California are good spots, we were wondering if there are any others along the coast that are good also. Keeping our options open.
southern california or south florida is the place to be for this.
This boat has had very little use and is in excellent throughout. Fitted with a Mercruiser 5.0 MPI Duo Prop Leg and Stainless Steel propellers ...
License requirements to be a yacht broker are what?
Having had exposure to boats/yachting it's time to turn that interest into a career move. That combined with previous sales experience makes a good fit.
Only a few states regulate yacht brokers. And those that do are more like car salesmen. Ask a dealer near you and I'm sure they can steer you in the right direction. There's no formal training like a realtor's license. If your thinking of starting your own, online business however, that's a lot different. Most states have basic requirements, like a fixed address for the business. Proper bonding and insurance etc. as well as business license and Tax number etc. I hope this helps.

How do I choose a Yacht Charter Broker?
I google Yacht Charter, and there are so many brokers that come up. I know they can all access the same yachts, and I knoiw to pick a CYBA or MYBA certified broker. But still... how do I know who would be best for ME?
I suggest that you call a few charter brokers and see who clicks with you. I am partial to Stacy@catamarans.com -443-569-4584.
You mentioned that they all go to the clearing houses - yes to some degree but brokers allied with one company or another will push their own product first, as they should.

What is the best way to become a yacht broker?
I've never done it so not speaking with any authority, but I would look at some sort of tie with an existing brokerage.
Some years ago a company called I think Network Brokers set up a sort of franchise operation with brokers at a number of marinas around the country.
In the event it rather fell apart but it had many advantages. As with any business starting from scratch is very difficult, you start with nothing to sell and no track record to show to potential customers and an empty book to boot.
I think there are 2 ways:
1 An internet based operation which has relatively low cost. Not sure how you attract people to sign up with you but I guess some sort of discount will come into it. At least you are not geographically tied to one marina/area.
2 Persuade an existing broker to open an office in a new area and have you run it on some sort of partnership deal. Don't know if that has ever been done but it would at least allow you to have some stock to sell.
The going rate is 6% but this is under some downward pressure (I sold my boat last year at significantly less)
When you take out advertising costs, premises etc etc and perhaps a pound or two to live on you need to shift a few boats to make ends meet.
Personally I think I'd rather be an estate agent
Just a few idle thought hope it helps a little
