Step 1:
Research the trucking and transportation industry to learn more about the day-to-day tasks of a truck freight broker. Basic skills needed include:
-Sales and marketing
-An understanding of the transportation system
-Customer service skills
-Bookkeeping skills
-Attention to detail
If you have little experience in transportation or shipping, you may want to take an online or vocational course in freight broker/agent training.
Step 2
Obtain the necessary license and bonding to open your business. Truck freight brokers need to complete and file the following paperwork through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA):
-Broker's Authority (Form OP-1)
-Surety Bond (Forms to fill out include BMC-84, Bmc-85)
-Processing Agent (Forms to fill out include BOC-3)
Step 3
Create a home office or rent office space. You will need a computer with Internet connection, fax machine, phone and transportation software. Many truck freight brokers work from home, which can save money in overhead costs.
Step 4
Contact trucking companies, manufacturers, and shipping yards and start building your customer lists. Establishing your business may take time, depending on the need for your services and your persistence. Once you establish these contacts, use this list to manage and increase your business. Step 5

You need to file with the US Department of Transportation. The fee is $1500 for each authority you request, and to be a broker, you must put up a $100,000 bond, which means spending at least ten per cent ($10K) with a bonding company. As a former owner-operator I can tell you right now that brokering loads is tough to get into, and even tougher when you are late with that first settlement check. Also, you must have a good client list before you begin brokering their loads. Then, advertising is the next key. You will also need a second telephone line, a fax line, a computer/internet hookup in the COMMERCIAL accounts, and the Department of Transportation will need to audit your safety rating on an annual basis. Believe me, it's not worth it, unless you can generate at least a million miles a month in freight.

There are actually 2 ways to broker trucks. You can become the broker with a broker's license (issued by the FMSCA.gov) and a BMC-85 $10,000 Bond or can become an agent of a broker for a commission split without obtaining the license or the bond. There are several nuances to this industry to be able to broker without liability. I actually work for a school that teaches how to become a broker safely and successfully. I am in a leagal dispute with my former employer in which I worked as a freight broker. One of the carriers I used as a broker asked me if I knew of someone to become his personal dispatcher. I then set up a company and my g/f handeled the dispatching service from her home. My employer then terminated me and is sueing me because they claim I set up a competivie business against him. New Jersey man pleads guilty of illegal asbestos dumping scheme
John Deck of New Jersey – sole owner and operator of J.A.D., Inc., a truck broker – has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and wire fraud charges in a Federal Court case concerning the illegal dumping of asbestos waste in a farm field in Frankfort, New York. Deck arranged for independently owned trucks to transport waste to or between solid waste management facilities. He and his company were involved in dumping approximately 60 million pounds of asbestos-contaminated materials in an open farm field adjacent to the Mohawk River.
As part of the operation, Deck admitted to obtaining a false and fraudulent Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) permit that was drafted by co-conspirators who are still under investigation. He then faxed the fake permit to various trucking companies who hauled the asbestos waste from New York City and New Jersey to the farm field.
