Hello. My father and his partner own a total of 15 trucks. They are tired of their current freight broker. They want to cut all the middle men out. That is where I come in- They want me to invistigate on how I can become their broker. I have no clue how to start. Time is money and I am missing out. They will back me up 100% through and after the process of becoming their broker. Any suggestions?
First, you need a solid business plan. Check the directory in your area for S.C.O.R.E.. It is a non profit group of retired business people who like to keep sharp by lending a hand to people just like you. They can help you immensely.
Of course, you will need a computer system/program to track and accept trucking assignments. If you have some venture capital, start listing what you need the system to do (from pick up to billing. Be thorough.
Once you get your toes wet your dad can be your best 'advertising'. Ask around, get a sense of how many other owner/operators are dissatisfied with their brokers AND WHY.
Then you must figure out what can you do better than other companies, and how to do it.
All the while you are working on these steps, sign up for business classes at the local JC.
Don't be afraid to pick any brain that might have information you can use. SCORE, local schools, your dad, and even the computer and systems development companies.
You've got the guts, get the knowlege.

What should I name my new freight brokeage? I live near Houston,TX and the only thing I can think of is to name it after my grandfather's business which is his trucking company..but that is not too catchy and attention grabbing...TJ&S Transport
My first suggestion is to name the business after a deceased relative. For example, Jake Brown Freight Brokerage. It gives the appearance of "a person" in charge, you have a history to the name, and if worse comes to worst, you can easily disassociate yourself with the business.
My other suggestion is to play on what you're trying to accomplish.... Crates to Trailers --or-- 18-Wheel Solutions.
My boyfriend is really interested in starting a business with me and he wants me to try and become a freight broker, because he is an owner operator and he can work with me and make enough money to be upper class. I don't know if this is true. Is anyone a freight broker and what kind of experience does it take? Did you make really good money?
I had the same idea when I was young and ended up losing my shirt. First, you need a license and face huge start-up expenses. Next, you need to build a clientele and that is not easy in this very competitive business. There is no loyalty in this business. The other guy ALWAYS tries to undercut you in price and sometimes, you simply cannot match their price.
I ended up working for a big freight brokerage business and didn't get rich but, made good money as I ascended through the ranks.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do though!
I would like to become a freight broker can anybody give me advise?
Yes, go to: www.atexfreightbrokertraining.com and get prepared by learning over the telephone and Internet. It's powerful and effective.
As I understand it, companies outsource their logistics activities to a 3PL provider which takes care of all of that clients logistics functions. But what is a transportation/freight broker? Are they just a company that will match a carrier with a shipper for the lowest price, but not necessarily take over the entire logistics process? Are they just a quick fix while a 3PL provider is a long term deal?
I do know that the Broker finds other carriers for the customer. It will most likely be a different carrier each time. I believe it depends on which carrier gets back to the broker first...where I work we use trucking brokers and trucking companies directly. I'm not sure how a 3rd party logistics provider works...sorry!
Load Surfer smoothes freight broker waters
MILTON, Ont. -- Load Surfer has partnered with factoring firm JD Factors to provide a unique guarantee on certain loads posted in the Load Surfer system.
In addition to being the lead factor on loadsurfer.com , the new alliance also means the addition of the “JD Guarantee” feature to Load Surfer.
A green ‘money bag’ icon appearing beside a load on the Load Surfer system indicates that clients factoring their invoices through JD Factors can take the load knowing that the load is factorable.
As a non-recourse factor, JD Factors also assumes the credit risk on these loads. Although the JD Guarantee is not a credit guarantee, the new tool gives Load Surfer members another powerful decision making tool, says the companies. For brokers, the JD Guarantee can also provide greater visibility and better access to carriers in the community.
Load Surfer CEO Roy Thacker explains that this new partnership is the direct result of feedback from members who feel that credit concerns have taken a front seat in their daily business transactions.
