I currently have Ameritrade and like their streaming charts with indicators. The problem is there streaming quotes often lock up. They also do not have trailing stops. I also use optionsXpress which I like, but I would like a different broker for my other account so that I can take advantage of some extra features. What are some of your favorite discount brokers, especially ones that are favorable to trading options in an IRA account? Thanks.

Who are some good discount brokers?

I like Schwab. Never have made a mistake, withing a couple of bucks of being the cheapest around, and their 24/7 phone service is amazing. Whoever answers always knows all the answers. No holding, no transfer to another office, no referral to a web site. Just good 1 on 1 personal talk, with a very knowledgeable person. Can't beat if for my money. And, their Street Smart Pro is a champion trading platform.

i was told by my discount broker that i cant chose the ECN. is that sucpicious and why? also, what other methods are there?

Most brokers chose the exchange with the best price at the moment. You may have to pay extra to chose a specific exchange. But why would you want to if it is not necessarily the best price?

I want to start by investing a small amount of money, something around $1000. I want to use an online discount broker such as E-Trade or Sharebuilder with INGDirect. I was wondering which of these brokers is best for a beginner. I would like to avoid any large fees or commissions. Thanks for your help!

I don't know abt ING, but e-Trade, TD Waterhouse, and Scottrade should all be ok for you.

E*Trade for example, requires foreign citizens to contact their local brokers.

Also, if you are an Albanian citizen (or any other for that matter), do you have to pay any taxes to the U.S. government?

PS. I know I can trade US stocks with a foreign broker, but because they do not have good online trading platforms I would like to trade through an American discount online broker.

You would have to pay capital gains tax to the United states government for one, also you are required to give a social security number to the online broker so they can check that you are legit, and to check your credit. so you have to be at the least i would imagine a perminent resident alien.
