Also what is the difference between an "agent" and a "broker"..
And is it better to do commercial real estate or residential?
Thanks!
Agent works for a broker and has less requirements to get licensed. A broker can do anything real estate related, including loans in California and commercial real estate. As to which is better, it depends on you and what you like.

I am a finance major and I was interested in becoming a commercial real estate broker.. Is this a hard job to obtain?.. Is it hard to succede at?... what is the salary range for most brokers?
Hard to become a broker...not really.
Hard to succeed...depends on you.
Make no mistake, this is hard work. Networking, selling, cold calling, canvasing, etc., be prepared to work and not necessarily make any money for the first few months. I didn't get a check for the first 8 months I was in the business.
If you work hard and have a good mentor, you can avoid a lot of mistakes and save some time. Find a firm that is willing to invest some time to train you and make sure you are part of a selling team. It will make things a lot easier.
The income can be enormous...I know more than a handful of guys in my market (Long Island) who make well over a million dollars per year. Lots of brokers here make between $100,000 - $300,000. But remember, it's all commission (you eat what you kill)
Good luck!

I am wondering whether it would be best to take a commercial real estate broker position in Sacramento or San Francisco? Which market do you think will provide the most opportunities in the long-run? The positions are at the same firm, by the way.
Thanks for your help!
In response to MC Wife, this is actually for investment sales. More specifically an intern position. Sorry, I should have given more details. I'm assuming that you feel the SF position is a better option for investment sales judging by the way you phrased your answer? Thanks for your all your help and input everyone, appreciate it!
San Francisco, if you are serious about making the big bucks.
Sacramento is really hurting financially right now.
I live in northern California and know both areas well.
P. S. Below, is the latest reason why you should NOT do business in Sacramento!
I am graduating next year and want to pursue a career in commercial real estate. Do companies especially the big ones CBRE and Colliers hire brokers right out of college? Is it hard for new unexperience brokers to sucede, I know it takes time, but is this a field most change jobs into after making connections.
I worked in both a commercial and residential real estate offices, each for around 5 years, in a support position. I will say that in both places, there wasn't much turn over. Not many "new brokers" that came on at either place. They were all VERY competitive! Good luck to you!
As a P.S. to your question...
I do have something you could start RIGHT now, while finishing school, and it would give you a great start to any career from the self development point of view. If interested .. check out my website at....
